I always encourage planner lovers, planner enthusiast, and individuals looking to live a more organized life to leverage planning as a best practice! I am a long time planner guru.  My love for notebooks, planners, and cute pens runs deep.  When I reflect on my childhood, I used to have notebooks everywhere!

I was constantly writing down dreams, plans, my calendar, cheer schedule, and everything else.  It has carried me through to adulthood and I’m still loving it.  I guess you can say that I am ‘ol school.  I prefer pen and paper over digital calendars.  Don’t get me wrong, I do leverage both for maximum effectiveness, but pen to paper is my sweet zone.

As a result of planning and strategizing, I was able to shift my family from debt to credit card freedom.  We are now on a path towards building sustainable wealth for our children! In total we paid off over $40K in consumer debt in less than 2 years.  Can you believe it?  Planning works!

Here is a video with my Simple 5 Step Planning Process and below are a few key points and further elaboration!

This simple process can be applied to any area of your life you are planning.  It is effective for budget planning, career planning, travel planning, or just planning your day.  If you follow these simple steps you will have a solid plan and you will see results in your life.

Specify what you are planning

Giving purpose to what you are planning helps you to navigate your journey.  Specify what you are planning for with some level of detail.  For example, “I am planning for xyz”.

Why are you planning

Your why will keep you anchored to your goals.  When you give meaning to what you are planning (step 1) and then connect it to your “why”, you will be more apt to work towards your goals.  Now our example becomes, “I am planning for xyz so that…”.  Adding so that is critical and will help feed into step three.]

Set SMART goals

SMART goals will help you to plan the activities related to the goals more seamlessly.  SMART is an acronym for specific, measurable, actionable, relatable, and time-bound.  This is connected to step two because it gives clarity to what you are planning and why.

Identify all known commitments

This will help you to plan more effortlessly because you have accounted for all dependencies and impacts related to what you are planning.

Leverage an effective planning style

Find what is going to work for you. It’s ok to try different methods, but if the planning technique does not work for you and your family, pivot. The goal is to find something that is going to work for you. It’s important to not replicate someone else’s method, but find what is going to work for you.
